liottaDAVE LIOTTA | Head Coach

Dave got hooked on triathlon in 1985 after competing in the USTS, Del Valle. He was lucky enough to be invited to train with a group based in Walnut Creek, CA that was coached by Marc Evans. Every workout with this group held a new lesson as even the best athletes in the world were ‘learning as they go’. Dave completely stepped away from his swimming and water polo endeavors to concentrate on triathlon after he won his age group at the Wildflower long course triathlon in 1986. Although he was most naturally predisposed for Olympic distance and shorter triathlons, the notion of Ironman racing was hard to shake after watching the famous “Ironwar” race in Kona. He went on to compete there four times having finished in under 10 hours.

Triathlon became a lifestyle for Dave and after studying philosophy in undergraduate school Dave decided to enroll in a Master’s program in Exercise Physiology. Issues relevant to endurance performance were of primary interest during his graduate studies. He published research on nutrition and endurance while also starting a side business with a mentor professor focused on testing and advising cyclists and triathletes. This business, “PR Consultants” is now “BeFit Consultants” based in Santa Cruz, CA. Dave still finds time to swim, bike, run occasionally but claims that the third transition into parenthood is at least as challenging and satisfying as any triathlon.
