Volunteerism and Community Support

Our membership provides volunteers at 4-7 events during the year. Our feature events include the Santa Cruz sentinel Triathlon whose proceeds support school sporting programs and local sporting associations in the county and the SuperKid Triathlon, which gives our youngest athletes (ages .3-14) a chance to experience the sport of triathlon in a fun and safe environment, Starting in 2005, SCTA has partnered with By the Beach Productions to co-produce the Superkid Triathlon. We are very excited to play a more significant role in this event. There were roughly 400 participants in the 2004 event and we hope to increase this to 600 for 2005. SCTA is embarking on a major fundraising campaign for this event. We are targeting to raise $12,000, which will pay for operating expenses, plus funding to support SHARP, the volunteering student groups, and other local community sports organizations.

We also support many of our local triathlon events. We believe that by providing volunteers for these events we help promote our sport to grow locally, support the local race directors to continue to provide triathlon events, as well as create a place for people to challenge themselves, build character and become healthier, positive individuals.

SCTA Training Events

Throughout the year, we provide many clinics and regularly scheduled training sessions for our members. We offer weekly coached spinning and outdoor cycling sessions, core body training clinics, V02 Max and Anaerobic Threshold testing, swim clinics, bike fit assessments, sponsor-based clinics at sponsor locations with a range of topics such as bike maintenance, choosing the best running shoe for your type of feet or finding the best heart rate monitor to suit your needs.

Meetings and Social Events

We have regular meetings, every other month, with guest speakers from the community. Topics range from medical information to the latest gear improvements to what to expect when traveling to other countries and race venues. We plan our speakers to give information that's needed at specific times of the year. For example, in the beginning of the season, members may want nutrition info or building their strength base in preparation for the early racing season. We also have fun events during the year to promote camaraderie and team building. At the end of the season, we have a banquet recognizing the achievements and special moments that have occurred during the year. This is also an opportunity to reveal the plans for the next season and generate some enthusiasm and excitement for everyone.

Marketing and Publicity

SCTA promotes itself through regular press releases and public service announcements in all the regional daily, weekly, and monthly newspapers, radio and television and magazine resources. We also have a presence at many regional race events with our 10' x 10' canopy and signage, participating in the expo areas. We provide a weekly "Eblast" to our email list (275 and growing) plus a monthly E-newsletter of the latest training opportunities, races, triathlon news, calendar events, member classifieds and sponsor news, Our website includes what's happening in our organization, helpful tips, links, and other pertinent information that members or visitors need.
